2.IntroductionIn thiscourse weaddress thefull spectrumof spatial analysis andassociated modelingtechniquesthat areprovided withincurrently availableand widelyused geographicinformation systemsGIS andassociatedsoftware.Collectively suchtechniques andtools areoften nowdescribed asgeospatial analysis, although weuse themore commonform, spatial analysis,in mostof ourdiscussions. In orderto coversuch awide range of topics, this Guidehas beendivided into a numberofmain sectionsor chapters. These arethen furthersubdivided,in partto identifydistincttopics asclosely aspossible.Chapter2provides anintroduction tospatial thinking, recently describedbysome as“spatial literacy, and addressesthe centralissues andproblems associated with spatialdatathat needto beconsidered inany analyticalexercise. This initialdiscussion isfollowed in Chapter3by anexaminationof themethodological backgroundto GISanalysis.Initially weexamine anumber offormalmethodologies andthen applyideas drawnfrom theseto thespecific caseof spatialanalysis.A processknownby itsinitials,PPDAC Problem,Plan,Data,Analysis,Conclusions isdescribed asamethodological frameworkthat maybe appliedtoavery widerangeof spatialanalysisproblems andprojects.Subsequent Chapterspresent thevarious analyticalmethods supportedwithin widelyavailablesoftware tools. The majorityof themethods describedin Chapter4and manyof thoseinChapter6areimplemented asstandard facilitiesin moderncommercial GIS packages suchas ArcGIS..Chapter5,which focuseson statisticalmethods, and Chapters7and8which addressNetwork andLocation Analysis, and Geocomputation, are muchless commonlysupported inGISpackages, but mayprovide loose-orclose-coupling withsuch systems, depending uponthe applicationarea. In allinstances weprovidedetailed examplesand commentaryon softwaretools thatare readilyavailable.
3.Course goalsand objectivesGeospatial analysis providesa distinctperspective onthe world,a uniquelens throughwhichto examineevents, patterns, and processesthat operateon ornear thesurface of ourplanet. This coursepresents studentswith thefundamental conceptsand advancedtechniquesofspatialanalysis.GIS andstatistical techniquesare discussedfor managing, analyzing andmodeling spatialdata.Students willgain practicalexperience inpubliclypresenting spatialanalysis topics. This coursealso intendsto preparestudents forapplying spatialanalysis techniquestohandle geospatialdata invarious fieldsand providestudents opportunitiesto gainpracticalexperience ofundertaking GISprojects.
