astronautor I wantto bea neurosurgeon,youre adultsin yourimaginations.Kids,theyre mostlikely to answer withpro-skateboarder,surfer orminecraft player.I askedmylittle brother,and hesaid,seriously dude,Im10,I havenoidea,probably apro-skier,lets goget someice cream.See,us kidsare goingtoanswersomething werestokedon,what wethink iscool,what wehave experiencewith,andthats typicallythe oppositeof whatadults wantto hear.But ifyou aska littlekid,sometimes youllget thebestanswer,something sosimple,so obviousand reallyprofound.When I grow up,I wantto be happy.For me,when Igrow up,I wantto stagehere sosoon.Imean,I justbecame ateenager,and like most teenageboys,I spendmost ofmy timewondering,how didmy roomget somessyall onits own.Did I take ashower todayAnd the most perplexingof all,how doI getgirls tolike meNeurosciences saythat theteenagebrain ispretty weird,our prefrontalcortex isunderdeveloped,but weactually havemore neuronsthan adults,which iswhy wecan beso creative,and impulsiveand moodyandget bummedout.But whatbums me out isto knowthat,a lot of kidstodayare justwishing to be happy,to behealthy,to besafe,notbullied,and beloved forwho they are.So itseems to me whenadultssay,whatdoyou wanttobewhen yougrowupThey justassumethat youllautomatically behappy and healthy.Well,maybe thatsnot thecase,go toschool,go tocollege,get ajob,get married,boom,then youllbehappy,right Youdont seem to make learninghow tobehappy and healthyapriority inour schools,its separatefrom schools.And forsomekids,it doesntexists atall But what ifwe didntmakeit separateWhat ifwe basededucation onthe studyandpractice ofbeing happyand healthy,because thatswhat itis,a practice,and asimple practiceat thatEducationis important,but whyis being happyandhealthynot considerededucation,I justdont getit.So Ivebeenstudying thescience ofbeinghappyandhealthy.It reallycomesdown topracticing theseeight things.Exercise,dietand nutrition,time innature,contribution,service toothers,relationships,recreation,relaxation andstressmanagement,and religiousor spiritualinvolvement,yes,gotthat one.So theseeight thingscome fromDr.Roger Walsh,he callsthemTherapeutic LifestyleChanges orTLCs forshort.He isascientist thatstudies howtobehappyandhealthy.Inresearching thistalk,I gota chanceto askhim afewquestions like;doyouthink thatour schoolstoday aremakingthese eightTLCs apriority Hisresponse wasno surprise,it wasessentially no.But hedid saythat manypeople dotryto getthis kindof educationoutside of the traditionalarena,throughreading andpractices suchas meditationor yoga.Butwhat I thoughtwas hisbest responsewas that,muchof educationis orientedfor betteror worsetowards makingaliving ratherthan makinga life.In2021,Sir KenRobinson gavethemostpopular Tedtalkof alltime.Schools killcreativity.His messageis thatcreativityis asimportant asliteracy,and weshould treatitwith the same status.A lotof parentswatched thosevideos,some ofthoseparents likemine countedit asone ofthe reasonsthey feltconfidentto pulltheir kidsfrom traditionalschool totrysomething different.I realizedIm part of thissmall,butgrowing revolutionof kidswho aregoing about their educationdifferently,and youknowwhatIt freaksa lotof peopleout.Even thoughI wasonly nine,when myparents pulledmeout ofthe schoolsystem,Icanstill remembermy mombeingin tearswhen someof herfriends toldher she was crazyandit wasa stupididea.Looking back,Im thankfulshe didntcave topeer pressure,and Ithink sheis too.So,out ofthe200million peoplethathave watchedSir KenRobinsons talk,why arentthere morekids likemeoutthereShane McConkeyis myhero.I lovedhim becausehe was theworlds bestskier.But then,one dayI realizedwhatIreallyloved aboutShane,hewasa hacker.Not acomputer hacker,he hackedskiing.His creativity and inventionsmade skiingwhatit istoday,and why I loveto ski.A lotof people thinkof hackersas geekycomputer nerdswho livein theirparentsbasement andspread computerviruses,but Idontseeit thatway.Hackers areinnovators,hackers arepeople whochallengeand changethe systemsto makethem workdifferently,to makethemwork better,its justhow theythink,its a mindset.Im growingup in a worldthat needsmore peoplewith thehacker mindset,and notjust fortechnology,everything isupfor beinghacked,even skiing,even education.So whetheritsSteve Jobs,Mark Zuckerbergor ShaneMcConkey havingthehackermindsetcan changethe world.Healthy,happy,creativity inthe hackermindset arealla largepartofmy education.I callit Hackschooling,I dontuseany oneparticular curriculum,and Imnot dedicatedtoany oneparticular approach,I hackmy education.I takeadvantage ofopportunities in my community,andthrough anetwork ofmy friendsand family.Itakeadvantageof opportunitiesto experiencewhat Imlearning,and Imnotafraid tolook forshortcuts orhacks toget abetter fasterresult.Its likea remixoramash-up oflearning.Its flexible,opportunistic,and itnever losessight ofmaking happy,healthy andcreativityapriority.And hereis thecool part,because itsamindset,not asystem.Hackschooling canbe usedanyone,even traditionalschools.Soo whatdoes myschool looklike Well,it lookslikeStarbucks alotofthe time,but likemost kidsI studylotof math,science,history andwriting.I didntused toliketo writebecause myteachers mademe write aboutbutterflies andrainbows,and Iwanted towriteaboutskiing.It wasa relieffor mygood friendsmom,started theSquawValley KidsInstitute,where Igot towrite throughmyexperiences andmy interests,while,connecting withgreatspeakers fromaround thenation,and thatsparked mylove ofwriting.I realizedthat onceyoure motivatedto learnsomething,you cangetalot doneinashort amountof time,and onyourown,Starbucks ispretty greatfor that.Hacking physicswasfun,we learnedall aboutNewton andGalileo,and weexperiencedsome basicphysics conceptslike kineticenergythrough experimentingand makingmistakes.My favoritewasthegiant Newtonscradle thatwe madeoutof bowlingballs,no bocceballs.We experimentedwith lotofother thingslike bowlingballs andevent giantjawbreakers.Project Discoverysropes courseis awesome,and slightlystressful.When youre60feet offthe ground,you haveto learnhowto handleyour fears,communicate clearly,and mostimportantly,trust eachother.Community organizationsplay abig partinmy education,High FivesFoundations BasicsProgram beingaware andsafein criticalsituations.We spenta daywith theSquaw ValleySkiPatrol tolearn moreabout mountainsafety,then thenextday weswitched toscience ofsnow,weather andavalanches.But mostimportantly,we learnedthat makingbaddecisions putsyou andyour friendsat risk.Young shouldtalk,well bringshistory tolife.You studya famouscharacter inhistory,and sothat youcan standon stageand performasthat character,and answerany questionabouttheirlifetime.In thisphoto,you seeAl Caponeand BobMarley gettinggrilledwith questionsat thehistorical PipersOpera HouseinVirginia City,the samestage whereHarry Houdinigot hisstart.Time andnature isreally importanttome,its calm,quietand Iget tojust logout ofreality.I spendone daya week,outside allday.At myFox Walkersclasses,our goalis tobeable tosurvive inthe wildernesswith just a knife.Welearn tolisten to nature,we learnto senseour surroundings,and Ivegained aspiritual connectiontonaturethat,I neverknewexisted.But thebest partis thatwe gettomakespears,bows andarrows,fires withjustabow drilland survivalshelters forthesnowy nightswhen wecamp out.Hanging outat theMomentFactory wherethey handmake skisand designclothes,hasreally inspiredme toone dayhave myown business.The guysatthe factoryshowed mewhyIneed tobe goodat math,becreative andget goodat selling.So Igot aninternship atBig SharkPrint toget betteratdesign andselling.Between fetchinglunch,scrubbingtoilets andbreaking theirvacuum cleaner,Im gettingtocontribute toclothing design,customizing hatsand sellingthem.The peoplewho workthere arehappy,healthy,creative,and stokedtobedoing whattheyaredoing,this isby farmyfavorite class.So,this iswhy Imreally happy,powder days,and itsagood metaphorfor mylife,my education,my hackschooling.If everyoneski thismountain,likemostpeoplethinkofeducation,everyone willbe skiingthesameline,probablythe safestand mostofthepowder wouldgo untouched.I lookat this,and seea thousandpossibilities,dropping thecorners,shredding thespine,looking forachurning fromcliff—to—cliff.Skiing tome isfreedom,andso ismyeducation,its aboutbeing creative;doing thingsdifferently,its aboutcommunity andhelping。
